Heather Heffernan, MSW, AICP - Founder, Facilitator, and Coach

Hi, I’m Heather Heffernan, MSW, AICP

I help communities, businesses, organizations, and individuals by facilitating the creation of clear, impactful vision statements.

I am an interdisciplinary professional with a unique background in urban planning, sociology, and social work. With this background, I aim to help communities. businesses, and organizations advance planning efforts by developing a shared vision for the future. Likewise, I enjoy helping individuals and couples take steps towards a more desired life by coaching them through a personalized visioning process. Carefully crafted vision statements are foundational to sound decision-making, resource allocation, and achieving dreams.

When developing a vision statement, I provide professional guidance and employ effective tools to help clients articulate their aspirations, align their values, and create actionable pathways towards positive change. Through my thoughtful approach, meaningful engagement, and a deep commitment to long-term success, I enable clients to transform ideas into reality, fostering a future where purpose and potential come together..

Welcome!

Who I serve

Gaining ground is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but I do work throughout the state.

Businesses, Organizations, and Communities that:

  • Are undergoing growth, redevelopment, or change and need help creating a shared vision for the future.

  • Value input from diverse voices—for example, youth, elders, and marginalized groups.

  • Are looking to establish a sustainable, resilient path forward—economically, socially, and environmentally.

  • Are motivated to engage in a visioning process and set long-term goals (10–20+ years) that are backed by stakeholder buy-in.

Individuals that:

  • Are curious about solutions and self exploration.

  • Feel dissatisfied, frustrated, or concerned about their current situation and are looking for more joy and fulfillment.

  • Have a sense of needing to change, but also have fear or confusion about what to do next.

  • Have experienced a life changing event, such as job loss, a cancer diagnosis, or divorce, and seek clarity about how to move forward.

Couples that:

  • Are committed to personal and relational development.

  • Want to make sure they are on the same page about life goals, values, and communication styles.

  • See alignment as a way to deepen their bond and prevent future conflicts.

  • Seek closeness through a shared vision.

What I do

  • Guide Clients through a Step-by-Step Process to Create a Vision Statement
Using proven techniques, I guide clients through a structured process that helps individuals or groups define a compelling picture of their desired future. Note: I can also help local jurisdictions and organizations with public engagement efforts beyond visioning. Please contact me to discuss your project and potential scope.

  • Deeply Listen and Empathize
I hear people’s stories, concerns, and hopes without judgment. I create an environment where individuals feel valued.

  • Focus on Strengths
Rather than dwelling solely on deficits or problems, I highlight assets, resilience, and capacities. Let’s build from what’s working and use your strengths to address what’s not.

  • Co-Create, not Impose
Visioning is done with people, not for them. It involves shared ownership, where participants help author the future. I promote agency and empowerment.

  • Offer Hope and Possibilities
I foster hope by helping individuals and groups see what’s possible. I encourage dreaming big while grounding visions in achievable steps, balancing imagination with practicality.

The result

Vision statements that are durable and actionable because they are built from carefully crafted and heartfelt engagement processes.

Finding the right path is about choosing the direction that aligns with your truth, even when the way forward is uncertain.
