Heather Heffernan, MSW, AICP

I am a mission-driven consultant dedicated to helping communities, organizations, and individuals create meaningful and sustainable change. I specialize in stakeholder engagement and vision development, partnering with clients to bring their goals to life.

I started Gaining Ground to lead dynamic, empathetic, and collaborative visioning processes with community groups, nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and individuals. I put creativity and heart into my work, and bring strong facilitation, communication, and strategic thinking skills to every project.

I have master’s degrees in sociology, social work, and urban planning. I am certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and I have over 20 years experience as an urban planner. I bring a holistic approach to every project—whether it is engaging large groups on a community-wide effort or helping an individual get unstuck. My expertise lies in integrating the complexity of being human with practical tools that help us move forward.

With a deep understanding of both the physical design of cities and the social systems that support human well-being, over the course of my career, I have worked on initiatives ranging from inter-jurisdictional cooperation, multi-modal transportation, and affordable housing development. My work emphasizes collaboration and integrity.

More specific to the work that I am doing with Gaining Ground, I have International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) certification, training through the National Charrette Institute, and developed an award winning youth engagement program for the City of Ann Arbor.

I am also living with cancer, which helps me have a deeper understanding of my own resilience and how to face life's challenges with more grace, humor, and strength. The experience of going through cancer treatment and recovery heightened a sense of purpose to help others who are struggling to find direction.

My Approach

I have a compassionate approach to assisting communities and individuals with visioning, which centers on empathy, sincerity, and collaboration. I seek to help people imagine a better future and to honor their lived experiences, key values, and inherent strengths in the process.
